I bought this book on Tuesday and got on Saturday. Shippment was soso. book condition is not bad. it is clean, and just cover is a little bit dusty.

It serves it's purpose.

This is the second physics text I have owned and I do not care for it as much as the first. It explains the material with a number of stories, historical references, etc. to aid in retaining the information, but the practice questions are a bit confusing. Also, there is little emphasis on equations and calculations which are a huge component to physics. It would not be my first choice, but it is an okay one.

this book is awful and i cannot believe our physics teacher assigned it to us for an introductory physics class. not only are the problems worded in such a way that they make zero sense, but there are more or less NO sample problems to get an idea of what you're doing from, nor are there answers in the back. does that make sense to you? me either. do not buy this.

Good product overall, minor markings

This was a good buy for my money. There were just normal highlights and few markings throughout the book, but nothing bad. Normal wear. Was shipped in the guidelines that were on Amazon. Certainly nothing extra speedy, but it was received within the guidelines.

Go with the single volume book!

There is nothing worse than pulling out 2 books in the middle of lecture and then trying to find a chapter or section with the rest of the class. It was difficult to put both books in my Jansport back pack, and it was difficult taking them out without spilling everything else! Do yourself a favor and just by the single volume to save yourself a hassle. Content wise, there are some sections that go nicely into details, and then there are sections that come short on explanations. I guess you will need a library of nursing books to get the whole picture.

Practicing, licensed RN: not a student

I have been licensed for 2 years. When i was in school, my last semester, this was the book that my professor used as an additional reference. I have been waiting for 2 years for the price to come down and bought this because of the standard that is part of lipincott, Williams & Wilkins. The info in this textbook will never be outdated. It is well organized & structured. Many nursing textbooks leave out very important information. This set has everything from a to z. I will never regret purchasing this used set for $25 which included the cd's unopened & the code for additional Internet access unused. My daughter is preparing to enter the nursing program & she will be able to utilize this excellent textbook in addition to that which the college will require. This is a reference book to keep!

Very Useful Textbook!

I use this textbook as a supplement to the required text for my nursing courses. Brunner's is a much easier read. It breaks down the material into simple terms and is easy to understand. I prefer to read it than my other book. Glad it came in two volumes rather than one ginormous volume!

Wow! Great! Excellent! Amazing etc.., the list can continue.This is one book that any starter in finance area will want to learn from. Its a power-packed source of information for any student who is just starting to learn finance, however if you are already a pro in finance, then don't even considering this book because you'll finish reading the entire book in a couple of weeks.

I used this book for my exams preparation along with brealey myers text and the combination simply pushed my rank into the outstanding bracket.

This book is particularly useful for the following chapters:
5. Introductio to valuation: time value of money
6. Discounted cash flow - Interesting chapter opening
7. Interest Rates and Bond Valuation - Great Derivations
8. Stock Valuation - Once again great derivation on formula's
9-11: Capital budgeting - will be useful to only absolute starters. I liked the material in Brealey Myers text, it is more advanced
12. Some lessons from corporate market history
13. Return,Risk and Security Market Line
15. Cost of Capital
19-21: Short Term Finance - Best coverage, though not complete in all respects.

Finally one honest note, I didn't know how to produce PV/FV/Annuity tables by myself before I bought this book. Now I able to produce them all by myself.

I you want to dig deeper in finance, just like I am doing, then I suggest you buy this book and principles of corporate finance by brealey myers.This book will provide you with the base that is needed to cover the other book that I mentioned.

A good and readable book on Corporate Finance

"Fundamentals of Corporate Finance" is a recommended textbook of finance which is simple to read and follow. I am a Senior Engineering manager and wanted to have a good grasp of financial principles and concepts. I found the book to be very user friendly. As I go up the corporate ladder, I need a good grasp of financial concepts and their practical implementation in the real corporate world. This book provided me with most the information I needed.

The book will enable the reader to use the theory underlying corporate financial decisions to assess advanced corporate issues and decisions. The major topics covered in the book include financial statements, valuation of cash flows, capital structure and budgeting, risk and return, use of debt and equity, cash and credit management and international corporate finance, among other topics.

The book has a wide range of learning tools that should facilitate the learning process. Reference to several website reinforces the concepts being presented in the book. Whether one is a student wishing to learn the important subject of finance or a manager wishing to manage the company finances more effectively, this is a good choice of book.

The only limitation I found in the book is its main focus on US systems only with few examples on what is happening in Europe and elsewhere. To learn about the City Institutions (London) or European Stock Exchanges, for example, you have to search for your information elsewhere. Notwithstanding this, I enjoyed reading the book, particularly self-assessing my understanding by attempting the exercises in the CD-ROM which comes with the book.

bad explanations

Like most math-based textbooks, this one explains the concepts in their most basic form, but is no help at all when you're trying to figure out how to get beyond the basic. The problems at the end of each chapter (which will probably constitute your homework) are either verbatim copies of the examples, or are so much more advanced than the examples that you might as well just use Google as your textbook. Either way, examples are sparse, and you feel like you're missing something when you try to do any of the problems.

This is a moot point for most people reading this, since you've probably been assigned it for a class, but if you're a professor please take pity on your students and assign them another book!

Excellent textbook for calculus; well-written.

I have been a fan of Roland Larson's math textbooks, as they have always been very clear and the practice problems always make sense. I was recently stuck in some calculus courses which used the calculus textbook by James Stewart, and that book is a nightmare! Fortunately, my multivarible calc prof prefers Larson's book, which is what we use in class. Very good book; I recommend it much over Stewart's. Also, do note that the odd-exercise solutions are posted for free online at Roland Larson's website, which is given to you in the book.

Great book

I used this book for Calc I and II.
The pre-calculus sections cover everything that you need for the calculus you'll be doing in the book.
If the pre-calc section didn't cover something you'll need in one of the 'real' chapters, the book covers it in the beginning section of that chapter.
Everything is organized well (in my opinion).
I do agree that the way some of the lessons are explained are sometimes hard to understand but all you need to do is fight through it to try to understand. If you still can't understand, just start trying the homework & the examples & you should be able to catch on.

Some classmates were complaining that it didn't review for Trig as much as it should've (you really need to have the special angle (30/60/90, 45/45/90) concepts memorized (or at least have the sin,cos & tan of the special angles memorized), however, I do remember the author adding additional sections in the appendix that covered the Trig you need to know for the course.
So make sure to check the appendix, it may have something you possibly need.

Overall, I really liked the book.
I highly recommend the H Anton book for Calc III though.
I had a really applicational calc III teach that NEVER did examples & never taught anything from the book.
He'd constantly go off on a tangent teaching applicational stuff that was very interesting, however, it did nothing for us in regards to the stuff we needed to learn for the class.
The H Anton book basically taught me the entire calc III material w/o a teacher.
The way it was written made it so you didn't really need a teacher.
If you're taking calc III, I definitely recommend the H Anton book (get it used though, don't pay high price based on my review. Not all books are for everyone, just b/c I liked it doesn't mean you would).

Excellent book

I bought this book for a Calc II course and found it to be excellent. The explanations, for the most part, are good, as are the diagrams and graphics, which make it very readable. Some of the explanations are more convoluted than necessary but these are the exception, not the rule. I would agree with the reviewer who said that the topics do not change - I have one of Larson's earlier textbooks and compared the two one day to find most of the exact same problems! All in all, a good book though. The website is great.

Great reference for the HR Generalist

As I researched which general reference book to add to my library, I consulted the "HRCI's PHR and SPHR Certification Guide" for which books and authors most frequently appeared in the notes. I found this book/authors the most. This is the most recent editoin and covers an extensive amount of information. A good feature is the frequent recommendations for places on the internet where one can investigate the topics further. Is it really worth so much??

I have just started my class that uses this book. It seems like a fairly good book. It's organized well enough. But it was $100! And when you get it, it's a lot smaller and shorter of a book than I was expecting for some reason. My professor said that the 12th edition was different enough from the 11th that we couldn't use the old one or we would be lost.

Fantastic

As a student of Business and having a limited acquaintance with law previously, I have to admit that this text is worth every penny. For those of us embarking on an entrepreneurial path, knowledge in the realms of torts, constitutional law, copyrights, cyberlaw, etc. is absolutely imperative.

The text contains recent cases, lower court decision, their backgrounds, abridged text submitted by the court and decisions made by the intermediate/supreme appellate courts. The authors present the text in a format not too difficult to read, but not easy enough to skim through.

Congratulations to Clarkson, Miller, Jentz and Cross for another fantastic text.

Typos, missing content, and errors oh my!

I got the Kindle version after I already had a hardback version for a Business Law class. The hardback version was fine, but what I found in the Kindle version was that the number of missing passages, typos, and errors was very high.

In one situation, one of the cases was actually missing! I was asked to read in class by my instructor, and had to borrow a book after a few minutes of struggling to understand what case he was talking about. I believe that was in chapter 9, but can't remember.

In other cases the formatting is rendered useless, and if things are in an ordered numbered list, they are just jumbled together poorly.

I just found in Chapter 10, several sentences that were cut off, and mashed together so incomprehensibly that I had to refer back to the paper version. I am sincerely grateful I have the paper version because there is no way I could have answered that take home test question with that passage because it doesn't make sense at all.

It is still useful, for the most part, to take to class, but I would not rely on it for tests. The information is just all to often missing, or has typos that render it hard to understand.

I'm actually very disappointed in this because I was going to buy all my textbooks in Kindle format if I could next quarter, but now I'm not so sure I should.

Everyone needs to read

There were a few sections of highlighting and underlining, but the text was still readable. I am finding this book very interesting. It contains a lot of information-a little overwhelming; however, gives a good overview of the principles of law. It is my favorite book this term. Most books I put back up for sell-I think I am going to keep this one.

Missing CD?

Like a previous reviewer, Rachael M. Thomas, I too purchased this book from Amazon, but it didn't come with a CD. I believe I bought it about the same time she did (assuming she purchased it around the time she wrote her review in April '09). It's the latest edition (12th). Brand new. Yet no CD. I mean, it has a little CD pouch or holder inside the front book cover, as if a CD should be inside of it. The pouch is shaped perfectly to hold a CD. But no CD. Weird.

Still, I'm very happy with the purchase. The text and illustrations are excellent. There's just enough info for a first year med student - not too little, not too much. It is somewhat dry, but, well, this is a textbook, not a novel. But the information is clear and accessible. Also, I like how anatomy and physiology are integrated, so you learn where things are located as well as what they do. Form and function. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I find it helps in remembering to study the two together. There are some other features such as the occasional histology slide to help out too.

The main drawback of an integrated textbook like this one is that it tends not to be as in-depth as a standalone textbook focused on a single subject. So, for more detail, some students might instead prefer to purchase separate textbooks for each subject - anatomy and physiology.

For anatomy, there are texts and then there are atlases. Texts explain anatomy and anatomical relations and so forth in-depth, and also include some photos, diagrams, etc. Whereas atlases contain tons of photos, illustrations, and other diagrams, as well as things like radiological images, with a sparse amount of text. You can preview various texts and atlases via Amazon's preview feature, or often they're also preview-able on the publisher's website, to decide what's best for you.

* For an anatomy textbook, Gray's Anatomy for Students and either (baby) Moore's Essential Clinical Anatomy or (big) Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy are often recommended. The strength of Gray's is its beautiful pictures and diagrams. But I find the text and organization leave something to be desired. Personally, I prefer Moore's. For example, I appreciate its famous blue boxes focused on the clinical application of anatomy. I think Baby Moore's is more than sufficient for med school. But from what I've heard from other doctors and staff, primary care and other related physicians tend to prefer Big Moore's between the two. So it might be worthwhile investing in Big Moore's if you're considering going down this track. And, to complicate matters a bit more, surgeons have their own specialized anatomy texts (e.g. Last's Anatomy).

* For an anatomy atlas, the classic is Netter's. Also, others recommend photographic ones like Rohen's Color Atlas of Anatomy. The benefit of Rohen's is it includes actual photos of dissected cadavers, prosections, and so on. But the problem with Rohen's is that it doesn't go as in-depth or get as detailed as Netter's or other atlases, although if combined with anatomy lectures, it should be plenty for most med students. Nevertheless some might prefer a non-photographic atlas like Netter's Atlas or perhaps Thieme's which doesn't have photos but illustrations or diagrams instead and tend to be more detailed than the photographic ones. Also, in my opinion, Grant's is underrated. It's a really fantastic atlas. It's mainly diagrammatic but it also includes other things like some photographs and radiological images. It's quite detailed too. In fact, many of the diagrams in Grant's are also used in Moore's. (Not so coincidentally, both Grant's and Moore's share authors.) The major downside of Grant's is that it's not as well organized as is for example Netter's, so it takes some searching around at first to familiarize yourself with where things are in Grant's. The experience can be frustrating to say the least.

But to be honest, I think lecture notes + anatomy labs + either an anatomy textbook or atlas of your choice (not necessarily both unless you have extra money to splurge) are more than sufficient for learning the basic gross anatomy required in most med schools and for the USMLE Step 1. If you want to go beyond, perhaps if you want to specialize in general or other surgery, then you can buy specialized surgical anatomy books later down the road. But for med school a single general anatomy textbook or atlas to supplement the material your med school provides you should be sufficient for most students.

By the way, in case any med students are interested, this is obviously just my opinion, but I don't think you need to buy tons of textbooks for med school. Just a few, essential ones should suffice.

I'll also preface what I'm about to say with the following caveat: I think it's a bit tricky to recommend a book without knowing more about the person interested in purchasing a book such as how they think and study or their background. Some books might work better for some but not necessarily for others. My recommendations are based on what I find helpful for me. But, again, I say all this because your mileage may vary.

* An anatomy textbook. Tortora's is sufficient if you want to combine anatomy and physiology in one textbook. But if you go with a separate anatomy textbook, I think Moore's is great. Although if you decide on Moore, it might be better to get Baby Moore which is less detailed. It's sometimes easy to lose the forest for the trees with so much detail. Then again, this might just be me.

* Or an anatomy atlas. I'd probably go for Rohen's. Even though it's not as detailed as Netter's or Grant's, this isn't at all to say Rohen's is poor in detail. Rohen's might not have as much detail as Grant's but it's still quite sufficient - especially when combined with anatomy lectures, etc. - to learn anatomy at the med school level. Of course, Netter's is simply classic. It's well organized and includes terrific hand drawings. Others have pointed out mistakes here and there though. Obviously it's good to take note of mistakes and errors. But I don't think the mistakes detract from learning anatomy all that much if at all. Plus, I'd doubt any atlas is absolutely perfect. Not to mention the human body can itself vary considerably even between otherwise perfectly "normal" people. All that said, while Netter's is classic, some people don't like his drawing or artistic style. I agree it is a bit old-fashioned or dated looking. Also Netter's doesn't include as many radiological images and other things like say Grant's does. But Netter's has been around for decades and is still widely used, so that should at least be somewhat meaningful. The best thing to do would be to check out each text or atlas individually and see what works for you. I should mention if you sign up with the AMSA, I believe they usually throw in a free Netter's. If you already have Moore's though you might not want to get Grant's as there's a lot of overlap between the two. Again, I'd recommend Rohen's if I could only pick a single book to recommend. But that's because I like the real life stuff. But I admit again Rohen's doesn't have as much detail as other texts. Like it won't look at the same anatomical feature from various angles like Netter's would. Still if it's used in conjunction with what your med school teaches then it should be more than adequate. But I can see good reasons to opt for other atlases or textbooks too (e.g. if someone is more of a textual learner and not so much a visual learner then it might be preferable to get an anatomy text like Baby Moore's).

* A physiology textbook. Tortora is good but not in-depth. Other good ones include Costanzo (the big one, not the review) and of course Guyton, which is classic. Boron's is quite good too. But it's immense and perhaps overkill for most med students. If it were me, I'd probably pick Costanzo's since it's relatively cheap so you can get quite a lot of bang for your buck. But Guyton's is of course far more comprehensive.

* A pathology textbook. Robbins Basic Pathology should be sufficient. But then again everyone seems to get the big one, Pathological Basis of Disease. I assume this is so they can reference it in their clinical years or during residency or whatever.

* A clinical examination textbook. Bates is often recommended. I haven't reached the clinical half of medicine so I can't really speak too much on this apart from what senior med students recommend.

* A medicine textbook. Everyone seems to love Harrison's. Yes, it's awesome. It's a complete Bible of medicine. But it's got way too much information. In fact, several resident and even attending physicians have told me it has more than what even they as physicians need to know. It's better to use something like the latest edition of Current's. Or check out ones used in the UK like Kumar and Clark's Clinical Medicine or Davidson's Principles and Practice of Medicine. During rotations, you'll see several other resources (e.g. UpToDate). Of course, a subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine and access to the latest journal articles is a great idea here too.

* First Aid for the USMLE Step 1. An absolute must. Then supplement with qbanks from places like Kaplan or USMLEWorld. Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology completes the trifecta.

Other books like histology and microbiology aren't absolutely necessary either. But some might like to get them. For histology, I appreciate Junqueira's over other ones like Ross or Wheater's. For microbiology many really like Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple. But others like me prefer more traditional textbooks like Mims'. Pharmacology is important too but it's a growing and expanding field so it might not be ideal to spend the money to buy a textbook. If you do, though, I've found Katzung helpful. It's good on fundamental principles. Like many, I like Lippincott's for biochemistry. Books on embryology, immunology, genetics, medical dictionaries, and so forth really aren't necessary, I don't think. For example, embryology is sometimes included in anatomy textbooks. There's a lot of great stuff available online too.

I should note that I don't read through textbooks in their entirety, but use them to supplement lectures, or when I don't understand something, or when I want to look up things in more detail.

Also, I should mention that many if not most med schools provide students with access to online med books via places like Access Medicine. So no need to buy many textbooks since it's likely you'll be able to access them online via your med school.

I think the main focus for the first half of med school should be lectures. Of course, there's always more stuff to learn, but if you stick to your lectures and what your med school expects you to learn, then you won't lose sight of the primary concepts - which you can then build on as it suits you.

Anyway, just my two cents' worth.

(One reason I'm mentioning all this is because I wasted way more money than I would've liked purchasing all sorts of textbooks that I hardly seem to use, and don't want others to make the same mistake. I guess it's not "wasted," per se, since I have a bunch of books I can easily reference. But, still, it's probably not warranted for me to spend $100 or whatever on a book that I'll only use a couple of times throughout the course of med school when I could just have easily borrowed it from the library or another classmate. Oh well. Live and learn. On the plus side, now others can borrow from me.)

An excellent book

I used this book in my first year of pharmacy school and it served its purpose well and beyond. The unifying theme of the book is how the human body mantains homeostasis and this theme is well incorporated into all of the topics. Each chapter has numerous images, graphs and tables that enhance and/or summarize the reading. At the end of each chapter is an excellent section of homeostatic imbalances which explains diseases and conditions regarding the specific body system being discussed. In addition, each chapter also has "clinical connections" sections that explain diseases, conditions or procedures and "medical terminology" sections. Being a pharmacy student, I found that the book does not emphasize on medications used to treat conditions, but it was ok since we don't get into medications in deph until our second year. One final thing is that, if you want to get a good understanding of each topic, you should read each chapter fully since reading only the section you are interested in will likely leave you with gaps.

This textbook is absolutely wonderful for learning Anatomy and Physiology. All of the professors at Delgado Community College decided on this textbook for the students, and I see why. The illustrations in the book are very good, and it is easy to read and understand. I will definitely keep this book for future reference after finishing Anatomy and Physiology.

BC:PP is an instructor's dream!

I teach an entry level MBA class that focuses on Leadership and Communication. Previously, the text for this class was average to poor. I dreaded using it. Starting this semester, we're using Mary Ellen Guffey's Business Communication: Process and Product text. It's a dream! It's a joy as an instructor to have an academic text such as BC:PP that is (a) very applicable to real-world business situations, (b) easy and fun to read, and (c) filled with tons of great ideas for class and homework assignments. In addition, instructors can request support materials such as video, PowerPoint chapter reviews, chapter tests, etc. that save a TON of time and effort! I am truly enjoying using this book, as are my students. I'd HIGHLY recommend it for any undergrad or graduate level communication course!

Microecon is not exactly the most exciting subject

I've used this book in an intermediate micro course at Berkeley, and I have to say that this is one of the best written economics books I've read. One of its greatest advantages is the clarity of explanation and abundance of visual aid such as graphs and tables throughout the book to support the material. The graphs get a bit complicated towards the last chapters, but that's only because the material that needs to be illustrated through those graphs gets complicated as well.

Second, even though I've had extensive economics background, the book could be suitable for beginners. The first two chapters give a concise overview of a basic Econ 1 course, explaining the basics of supply and demand, market structure, etc. - everything a person with little economics background needs to know to be able to understand this book. However, if you find this book to simple for you, keep in mind that Prentice Hall publishes it as "Intermediate Economics" - for use in 2nd or 3rd year in an undergraduate economics program.

Unlike many other econ textbooks I've encountered, this book is neither math-heavy nor theory-heavy - it has a good balance of theoretical information coupled with enough mathematical examples to get the message across. However, many students (and some reviewers on this website) find that there aren't enough examples and exercises (with answers) in the book - for that I'd HIGHLY recommend getting the Student Study Guide. It quickly summarizes each chapter (good for emergency test/quiz studying) and provides plenty of sample problems as it summarizes the concepts. It also includes a quick chapter quiz and gives the solutions to all problems found in the Study Guide.

Also unlike most outdated econ textbooks today, this one includes excellent chapters on Game Theory and pricing strategies. I've heard from a few business majors here at Berkeley that they're encouraged to read those two chapters as good examples of how these concepts apply to business and economics. The book features many "Sample Boxes" - small paragraphs on how the current topic of discussion has been applied in the real world. This helps understand that economics is a real science (in a sense that it can produce theories that are testable in the real world) and has some useful applications.

Overall, this is a very good economics textbook for intermediate microeconomics. The book alone deserves 4 stars, but coupled with the study guide, it's definitely a 5.

Product Note about the Package Edition

Just for those who might be wondering, the package edition includes the hardcover textbook as well as the corresponding workbook. Since the description does not make this clear, I thought I would mention it, since this is quite a bargain if you're buying both anyway.

A good book for intermediate level students

Organization of the books is good. Topics are discussed with enough clarity and each topic comes with lots of graphs and illustrations (which I think are a great help at that level). The level of algebra and math is at an intermediate undergraduate level (economics major). I think it is a complete book for anybody who wants to have an understanding of microeconomics. I am a Ph.D. student of economics now and if I am going to teach an undergrad micro course, I will certainly choose this textbook.

If you use this book to teach intro soc, be aware of an error in it

This review is written for other instructors considering or using this textbook to teach introductory sociology. It's not a general review of the book from a student perspective.

Henslin writes various sizes of the down-to-earth textbooks, small (core concepts), medium (essentials), and large (the main textbook, this one). All of them feature Henslin's real-life approach and emphasize common sense vs. social knowledge based on facts and on use of sociological concepts. But it is sloppily edited. In every edition of these books that I have seen, including the new 10th edition, and in each size (s, m, l), an important error is repeated in the gender chapter: the claim that most victims of homicide are female. The error is in the chapter text, the chapter-end summary, and the test bank (watch out for that question). It matters because a) I'm trying to teach students that facts are more reliable than guesses, stereotypes, and media-based perceptions, b) the particular error reflects the slant of the gender chapter, which is women-as-victims-of-men, when the truth is more complex (women are also victimized by women in many ways, in many countries; and men are most often the targets of violence by men), and c) if students are paying this much for a book, the basic facts should be right.

I've communicated this error repeatedly over the past year to my rep, who is unwilling or unable to pass it on to the publisher. I tried to find a way to contact the publisher via the website and gave up. I don't want to knock the book as a whole--it has many good features--but I won't use it again until this is fixed. There are too many similar alternatives, and I can always discuss some of Henslin's common sense vs. reality points in class without using it as a required text. I like the TestGen system, and the testbank for this book is good with the exception of the question I've pointed out here. (On the other hand, there may be other factual errors in the book that I haven't noticed.)

As an instructor, I've found that the password-protected study site is a disadvantage of this book and publisher. The study site is high quality and is great if the student buys the book with the password card still attached. But students who buy it used without the card get upset when they can't access the site and blame me for the problem. Open-access study sites are the way to go, publishers! This is one of those textbooks in which continual new editions are not really needed but get published anyway because of the changing structure of the textbook market. That practice is so common that although it creates incredible book costs for students, there are few ways to get around it.

Great book for class

I bought this book for a required class. With most classes, I have trouble reading the textbook. With this book, I had trouble putting it down! This book has some great details and stories that seem to link together with other psyc classes. My ONLY complaint is it does NOT come with an access code to the website and the fee to use the website is around $70! Too expensive for a student!

A really nice book

I had to take a Sociology class as an elective and I had to use this book. Despite that I hated the class, but the book itself made it less harder on me. I'm not into either literature or philosophy or sociology or all this, but once I started reading the first couple pages, I found myself kind of I want to read more and more. The author made it very appealing, by giving a very nice examples (as short stories) from all around the world. His example makes you realize things you live everyday and their impacts on your life and others life, without you noticing it.
It's so good written, that my wife did not allow me to sell it back after I finish the class (I got 'B')

pretty poor

The book is difficult to understand. Many of the graphs are not clearly labeled or explained. The formulas have random subscripts which are not clearly explained in words. Looks like someone just copy and pasted graphs and spreadsheets from excel and were too lazy to label them clearly. Not organized in easy to understand sections. Overall there are better books for intro to finance.

A very incomplete textbook.

This is the worst textbook I have ever used. I am seeking an undergraduate degree and have some idea of how investments work, and am very good at math, but this book seems to complicate the simplest of formulas. There will be formulas that you have to know that will never get brought up. There will be limited explanations in the examples, and the powerpoint slides and excel slides that are available on the website are useless. You cannot expect to learn much more than the basics of investments if you use this book as your sole guide to investment analysis. Be prepared to pay for a tutor or to waste hours of your time trying to figure out the missing steps in this book. I am glad to be done with it.

Comprehensive Introduction to Intermediate Accounting

In addition to being a comprehensive introduction to intermediate accounting, the book also provides (1) supplemental study tools on the highered education website and (2) sample CPA and CMA exam questions. The study tools featured on the website include: check figures, excel templates for select problems, flashcards, sample exams, sample multiple choice quizzes and powerpoint slides.

Not the US version

I ordered this book, believing it was the US version since the picture shows that and it also says it's the hardcover. However, i received my order today and it is the international version. Even though the contents are probably the same, I can't resell this in my school after the semester is over. It doesn't say anywhere in your site that this is an International Version, and it has the picture of the US version and it says it's a hardcover. Mine is not.

Accounting student

I'm using this book for my Intermediate Accounting 1 class. The book is an appropriate textbook. However, when doing the practice exercises, it is sometimes very difficult to answer the questions based only on this book. It was helpful for me to consult my previous financial accounting textbook to make sense out of the adjusting entries exercises.

Wonderful Textbook

I had to take Statistics as part of my degree cirriculum. On top of that, I was taking this class distance learning style; no classroom teacher, no nothing. So I was really depending on this book to explain the concepts and formulas in an easy way that I could understand. Luckily, the book did just that.

It is VERY well written and I believe anyone could learn Stats just by using this book, as I did. It also comes with a bunch of CDs that contain study guides, answer sheets, and software programs that makes Stats a snap.

If you take a Stats class, or just want to learn Stats on your own, this is the book to get!

Used Books are Incomplete

Buyers beware of purchasing used books. Classes generally use this text with Course Compass' MyMathLab, and you need a code to access the site. New books come with the code, but if you purchase a used book, the code might be already used. The code I purchased was $57.00. The code is more important than the textbook, so buy used books with caution.

Great price, but be sure you are getting what you need

This was a LOT cheaper through Amazon than at my school's bookstore, but I had to buy an access code separately through the MyMathLab site.

This isn't clear when you buy, but if Lab access is required by your college, you will not get the code you need unless you buy at the school bookstore. Fortunately, you can buy the book through Amazon -- for about $50 cheaper than at my school -- and then only pay $25 for the access code on line.

Just be sure you know what you need. Not all classes that come with My--Lab internet segments require that you buy a code, but you can always buy one later.

By the way, MyMathLab is amazing. It's making this Statistics class a piece of cake!

A well written introduction to human physiology

The best aspect of this text is the quality of the writing. The writers have a clear excitement about the subject, and for the most part, this makes reading the text pleasant rather than dry.

The book opens with an introduction to homeostasis and provides a theoretical backbone for the study of human physiology. The second chapter is the obligatory introduction to fundamental chemistry (atoms, protons, neutrons, electrons, etc.) that seems to be in almost every basic science book. Chapters three, four, and five are typical of almost all texts about life - cell structure and function, proteins, metabolism, and chemical messengers.

It's not until chapter six, "Neuronal Signaling and the Structure of the Nervous System," that the text begins to move away from an introductory biology book. Chapter six serves as a model for the rest of the book and the central principle of physiology: The human body wants to be in balance, and there are competing chemical and electrical pathways fighting for and against this balance. The final chapter, which my professor skipped, is medically oriented. The student is asked to consider what they have learned and apply it to a case study narrative, to essentially diagnose a patient.

Throughout the text there are numerous figures, tables, key words, and end-of-chapter study guides (the guides are very helpful for organizing information when studying for a test). Yet the diverse presentation of information is a bit overwhelming sometimes. For example, some chapters have far too many bolded key words in a row, which can be distracting to read.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this text. There's a lot of information in this book, but if you take the time to read and reread the text, you'll have a very good understanding of basic human physiology.

Detailed but Approachable

I haven't had any exposure to biology-related topics for quite some time, but Vander's Physiology brings it back with enough depth and breadth to understand without getting lost in the details. This is not the most recent edition but still very useful for those of us not going much further in our study of physiology.

NIce read- if you're into that kind of thing

As far as textbooks go I find no faults with Brock. The book has a great level of depth and certainly covers such a broad subject splendidly. I'm finding it difficult to separate the book from the instructor I had but as I think about it I wish I had relied more on the text than on lecture notes. Since most people purchasing this text are forced to buy it, I'll speak to the minority of those just desiring to learn microbiology on their own and say- "you're crazy" and you should probably read Brock!

Brock Biology of Microorganisms

The book was said to be like new, but really it is in fair condition. The binding is loose and there was a lot of highlighting in it. For 21 dollars it was still a great deal. I had high hopes of a like new book and was a little disappointed when i got it in fair condition. I am still glad i got the book cheap.

Great Addition to the Personal Library

I love this. I've had some interest in Psychology in general, so when I needed this book for my Social Psych. class, this was well-informed of all the issues and concepts that are presented in analysing society as individuals and groups. It has opened my eyes to see people in a different outlook when people are rude, inconsiderate, or when people come as "weird."

Besides those particular points, it also helps in understanding your own personal actions. You can receive a lot from this book that can benefit yourself and others for the good of your social environment. Highly recommend this.

Best Textbook I've Ever Used

Hands down, this is my favorite textbook! It did an amazing job of presenting the material. Reading the book didn't feel like school work at all.

Each chapter started with an interesting story, some of which I had heard on the news before. Then, the chapter explained the concept at hand, and concluded by explaining how the concept applied to the story. The text was very easy to understand and very interesting, with many examples. The book was filled with graphs and diagrams that enhanced the text. I can't express how much I enjoyed this text.

I thoroughly recommend taking a Social Psychology class if you can, and definitely use this text book!!

Social Psychology Starters

I'm an engineer by trade and thus have not had much experience with studies in this area. This book provided real life breakdowns of scenarios within social psychology that makes it understandable to me (who has no previous background). I enjoyed many of the topics discussed and have even been able to apply a lot of the cases stated in the book to my real life situations. I consider this book beneficial for everyone who is involved in some type of social setting, whether work or personally related.

Ideal Text

David Myers has done something incredible: written a near perfect textbook that can be used both at the AP and university level. Obsessively up to date, and an occasional quip so you can have a laugh. The book is balanced with physiological explanations as well as some representative behavioral treatments. The text is now a standard for beginning level psychology.

Great Text!

I used an older edition of this text book when I was a sophomore in high school for my AP Psychology course. The text book was interesting, and was very consise and easy to read. My teachers weren't the best, but with this textbook I was able to score an easy 5 on the exam (I almost laughed during the exam because it seemed too easy).

The only bad thing I have to say about this textbook is that the binding isn't that strong. It would be great for a one use occassion, but because my school used these for a few years, it didn't take much to put all of the "Myers in Modules" books into pieces.

Overall, it's a great textbook, and I highly recommend it for anybody who is taking an introductory psychology course, the AP Psychology course, or anybody who is interested in psychology!

Save your back... get the two-book version

This same book is available in a two-book set. I highly recommend the split version so you don't have to carry one, huge, heavy book around all semester!

Not for your entry level nursing student

This book is great if your studying nursing at a Master's Degree level and the emphasis of your learning is on pathophysiology. Otherwise don't even bother with this text, it repeats itself with information every few paragraphs or refers you to other chapters when discussing a particular disease process. Unless you've had organic chemistry and some upper division biology, and bio-chemistry classes, this is not the text for the beginner. The tables are confusing, and once again the use of diagrams is overwhelming to the beginning nurse. I strongly reccomend that if your going to purchase this book, you buy it used, it's not worth the money new.

Excellent resource - but not on Kindle

I found this to be an excellent resource of information, particularly the various therapeutic approaches. However, I was extremely disappointed that I had ordered via my Kindle rather than hard copy. The charts provided in the book are not legible in the Kindle edition and for $80+, I felt cheated from crucial study material contained in the compact format of the various charts.

Corey's Theory & Practice of Counseling & Psychotherapy

This is an excellent book, and probably the best of its kind. It guides you through the various approaches to psychotherapy, giving you all the details necessary for you to comprehend each method fully as well as to compare the methods with one another. The comparison becomes even easier as Corey presents the case of "Stan" at the end of each chapter and demonstrates how each approach would deal with his dilemma. I think this book is interesting for anyone who likes psychology and psychotherapy, but is a must for people looking to go into the profession of psychotherapy in order to attain a broad perspective about techniques and approaches that may be employed according to one's personality and style, as well as each unique client's needs..

Great Text for Counseling Students

I was assigned this text for my Theories of Counseling class my first semester in graduate school. Corey does a great job of breaking down 14 different therapeutic theories into their most basic principles. This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about becoming a therapist or for that journeyman therapist who needs a quick refresher.

Great, but Last 5 Chapters are Electronic

GREAT book, but the only problem is that the last 5 chapters are in PDF format on an attached CD rather than in print (they did this to make the book more portable). If you want the full print version, buy the Reference edition.

Comprehensible by Non-Specialist

[Reviewing 5th Edition, Chapters 1-7] I'm a Ph.D. computer scientist working on an NIH grant in text mining biomedical literature, so I thought I should bone up on the underlying science. The first seven chapters of this book are just what I needed. The first overview chapter is an excellent standalone introduction to the cell and genomics/proteomics and their ilk. After a two-chapter very comprehensible introduction to biochemistry (strong emphasis on thermodynamics/energy and bonding/structure) and protein structures, the next chapters lay out the entire process from DNA to protein, including expression control.

It's slow reading (it takes me an hour or more to read 10 pages), but very clearly written, and very thorough. The diagrams and accompanying text are amazingly clear and helpful. (There are also animations, but I've never looked at the DVD.) The diagrams and their long captions are often supplementary in that they add details that are not in the body of the text.

I had read the same sections of the 4th Edition a few years ago. The 5th edition adds substantial new material starting with the chapter on proteins. Ironically, the 5th edition is more speculative, because the more we find out about gene expression, the further away full understanding seems to be. The book does a nice job of balancing what's known fairly certainly with speculative guesses about things like chromatin structure.

This time, I think I'll keep going. The sections of the rest of the book I've browsed when they've been cross-referenced are also excellent.

another part of the problem with academic book publishing

The publishers have made the standard edition (ISBN-10: 0815341059) of MBOTC more "portable" by not printing the final 5 chapters of the book, but including them as electronic files on the DVD. While these chapters are included, in print, in this reference edition (0815341113), take a look at the price differential between the two. If, as publishers might like us to believe, portability is such a great feature for a textbook, then why should students be expected to pay a premium for this less than portable reference edition?

The chapters in question are:
21-Sexual Reproduction: Meiosis, Germ Cells, and Fertilization
22-Development of Multicellular Organisms
23-Specialized Tissues, Stem Cells, and Tissue Renewal
24-Pathogens, Infection, and Innate Immunity
25-The Adaptive Immune System

With the 4th edition there were 25 printed chapters and 1616 pages: $5.68/printed chapter, or ~8.8 cents/page based on my calculations using list price info. With the regular 5th edition, 20 printed chapters, 1268 pages: $7.10/printed chapter, or ~11.2 cents/page. And with the reference edtition, 25 printed chapters and 1728 pages: $8.36/printed chapter, or ~12.1 cents/page. So the page cost for this reference edition has increased by over 1/3 as compared to the last edition, and is about 8% higher than for the regular 5th edition. Admittedly, I am a major geek for actually doing these calculations.

I am giving the book 2 stars for content, because it really is a solid resource for learning molecular biology. However, with so many students carrying a heavy burden of debt upon graduation, it's a shame to see the continuing trend of exorbitant prices for the best texts, making them just another contributor to the problems with education today.
